Your First Consultation with Dr Kernohan
Before your first consultation with Dr Michael Kernohan you will be asked to complete a patient registration and medical questionnaire form that will be sent to you via email or post. This form will enable Dr Kernohan to collect important medical information; including your previous medical history and current medications as well as your contact details.
Are you considering cosmetic surgery?
If so, Dr Kernohan recommends that you see him for 2 appointments prior to surgery.
At your initial consultation, Dr Kernohan will take your medical history in detail. After, Dr Kernohan will examine you to assess your individual needs and suitability for surgery. This first consultation may take approximately 30 minutes.
You will also be able to view before and after photographs from past patients. Dr Kernohan will also provide you with patient information sheets detailing the type of surgery you have discussed.
It is important that you carefully read these information sheets. You should also write down any questions to discuss with Dr Kernohan at your next consultation.
You are welcome to bring someone with you to the consultation such as your partner, friend or relative as this may assist you to remember as much information as possible, and you can then discuss it with them later.

After Your First Consultation
Following the initial surgery consultation, another appointment for a consultation is normally made to discuss any further questions you may have. You will also be provided with a written quotation of surgical costs from Dr Kernohan’s team before this appointment. This surgical quotation is then valid for one year.
Dr Kernohan will ensure that any procedure is explained as clearly as possible so that you can understand what may be involved and that you are fully informed.
You may also find it helpful to read the information we have provided which includes some guidelines to assist you in choosing your surgeon and understanding the training and qualifications of a plastic surgeon.
Getting a medical referral from your
- All patients require a medical referral preferably from your GP to see a plastic surgeon for a consultation for cosmetic surgery.
- A Medical Referral from a GP is valid for 12 months and a referral from a specialist is valid for 3 months.
- If your surgery is eligible for a Medicare item number you will also need a valid medical referral to access the Medicare rebate and maybe a private health fund subsidy.
